Reading How do you prepare your non-reader to love reading? Whet his appetite by reading to him! We've included six alphabet books to get you started. These titles differ from your average alphabet books in that the illustrations and subject matter are more complex. Delve into the topics as little or as much as you wish; you can use them as a springboard for discussion. In the process, your child will learn a bit of geography and some interesting features of the world. You'll need to add more books, but this will get you started. Reading should be pleasurable, and at this age that is easy to attain! (Includes France, Kenya, India, Israel, Italy, and New Zealand.)

Language Arts When you think of grammar, do you think of endless memorization and lengthy, tedious workbooks, suitable only for the most meticulous older student? If so, you're not thinking of Language Lessons! Language Lessons is the finest implementation of the Charlotte Mason method of instruction we've seen. The short daily lesson may include a picture study with a full-color painting, basic phonics instruction, poetry appreciation, narration, or copy work. It is a great way to cultivate language skills in your youngster, long before he can read.

Thinking Skills You and your child are sure to enjoy Building Thinking Skills Beginning. The colorful pages and (often) lap-friendly activities provide a perfect way to build his emerging thinking skills. Includes fun riddles, multiple component descriptions (point to the one that is blue and has a corner), finish-the-picture activities, opportunities for him to tell the story behind the pictures, and much more. My First Brainbox is that all-too-rare game which actually teaches while you play. Pick a card out of the box, let your child study it, then ask him one of the questions on the back. Too hard? Let him look at the card while he answers. Auditory processing skills, visual perception, and even losing graciously can all be addressed here!

Science Blast of Color is the perfect first science kit. Creative and colorful, it introduces the basics of color theory and the scientific method. Using his own "lab," he will make colored water and use a color wheel to make even more colors. He will grow colored crystals and make them into a rainbow tube. Watch him marvel as he grows colored snow and garbled marbles from small beads, then sorts them by color using the sorting/mixing tray. Of course, this is only a taste of science, but it is a great place to start. Remember to work-in real-life encounters throughout the year – visit the zoo, bake cookies, and explore your backyard!

Math Mathematical Reasoning Beginning is a highlight for this age. The activities are simple, engaging, and colorful. Whether it is drawing a line from the dog to the correct number of bones or crossing out the pancakes mom and dad ate for breakfast to determine how many are left, this book is a perfect introduction to the basics of math.

Fine Motor Skills Coloring, cutting, tracing, folding, drawing, and pasting—the I Can... books provide hours of productive entertainment. While developing the fine-motor skills he will need for writing, your child will also learn his colors and practice following directions. Each of these six titles is a large, colorful book. The I Can… series is well-loved by kids and parents alike!

Construction Construction provides a child with opportunities to develop spatial skills, problem-solving abilities, and 2-D to 3-D translation skills. The Wedgits Starter Tote excels at all of these. Includes twenty Wedgits, the Building Board, and forty-eight design cards.

Other Yes, even at this age kids love Thinking Putty and find it as engaging as clay, without the crumbly mess. Be forewarned that it tends to stick to fabric, including carpets, so this probably serves best as a kitchen table activity!

Usually recommended for 3-4 year olds, the preschool bundle is designed for the child who is ready to begin 'schoolwork' but is not quite ready to start reading.
