Language Arts and Reading
When you think of grammar do you think of endless memorization and lengthy, tedious, workbooks; suitable only for the most meticulous older student? If so, you're not thinking of Language Lessons! Language Lessons is the finest implementation of the Charlotte Mason method of instruction we've seen. The short daily lesson may include a picture study with a full-color painting, poetry appreciation, narration, copy work or more. What a great way to cultivate language skills in your fifth grader!
Daily Traits uses a quick daily lesson approach to build writing skills without overwhelming your student.
Sequential Spelling is not only the most logical spelling program we've seen, but it is also one of the easiest to use. Simply read him one list of words a day to write down, correcting any mistakes as you go. That's it! The sequences are based on building from easy words to advanced words such as from all, tall, stall, install, installment, to installation; an intuitive approach with no memorization required. If your student has not yet completed Sequential Spelling books 1-3, you will want to complete those titles first.
Why include Word Roots? Because everyone agrees that children who have a solid grasp of word roots are bound to be children with better spelling and reading comprehension skills, primarily because they have acquired the ability to decode words. We knew we didn't want to teach Latin and Greek roots with a program too dull, too schoolish, too intense, or based too heavily on mythology. We also knew that moms are busy enough without another teacher-intensive topic to worry about. With those objectives clarified, it was easy to see that Word Roots is perfect, with its self-teaching, simple and engaging approach. We've not seen any word roots program more effortless than this one!
While we believe reading is the single most important skill to cultivate in your fifth grader, you'll notice that we did not include any traditional readers. Don't let this puzzle you. Our experience is that the best way to help your child become an eager reader is to constantly supply him with reading materials that interest him. Future doctors may want to read up on anatomy; young explorers are drawn to the escapades of adventurers young and old; and the baby-lover in your family will be captivated by adoption stories. Assign reading if you must, but encourage it at all costs; a child who enjoys reading will find it easier to excel in every area.
We are including 3 sample Graphic Novels for you, on assorted topics relating to this year's studies. The colorful, engaging approach has been a big hit with eager and reluctant readers alike. |

Math
Finally, a math text designed specifically for homeschoolers! Teaching Textbooks Math 5's engaging and often humorous text is specifically written to independent learners, and generously illustrated with friendly line-drawings. Teaching Textbooks contain far more explanation than any math programs on the market, but because the series was designed for homeschoolers studying independently, it uses far less irrelevant jargon than other textbooks, while still retaining all the terms that students need to know for those important standardized tests.
This program is computer based, with down-to-earth, step-by-step multimedia lectures, problems and solutions. After watching the lecture, your child will complete the problems in their workbook; then enter the answers into the computer, where the digital gradebook keeps track for you. The lectures cover the same material as the written lessons in the textbook in greater depth, and many students prefer to listen to (and watch) an explanation for each lesson rather than read it out of a book. Field-tested with outstanding results; this is a brilliant idea, long overdue and skillfully done, with many hours of instruction. Enjoyable, efficient, and effective, what more could you want from a math program? |

Thinking Skills
Without the ability to think things through thoroughly and logically, your child will be severely handicapped. But that doesn't mean that your child must drill endlessly with boring rules of logic. In fact, this year we will provide you with 3 different thinking skill books. The 2 different Mind Bender books will work on trial-and-error and deductive reasoning in an ever-popular format. The Red Herring Mysteries book is actually an interactive book where you pose the problem (The sign outside a business reads, "If you don't see what you want, you've come to the right place." What kind of business is it?) and he asks yes or no questions until he figures it out. Sure to captivate your whole family – but don't worry, answers are included!
Please note: if your child has not yet completed Building Thinking Skills 2, we strongly encourage you to do that this year; the foundational skills covered there will be needed throughout his lifetime. Call us if you would like to substitute that book in this grade. |

Science
A colorful, conversational approach to science, Zooloy 3 is also very easy to teach. This program is a notebook-based approach; meaning that as you go through the course your child will be asked to write, draw, or dictate the results of his experiments into a notebook. Not only will this help him retain what he learns, but at the end of the year you will have a lovely record of his work! The hands-on experiments sprinkled throughout the book are sure to be a highlight for both of you.
Please note: The author strongly recommends that Zoology 1 and Zoology 2 be completed prior to beginning Zoology 3. If you have not yet completed those levels, feel free to call us to substitute one of them in this grade. (The most critical component of Zoology 1 and 2 not reviewed in book 3 is classification, particularly at the Phylum level. If your student is well acquainted with this topic, you may find book 3 to be perfect for you.)

History
In well over twenty years we have never before offered an American history program so complete, so captivating, and so well-conceived. Similar in many ways to the highly popular Mystery of History series, All American History is far more engaging than any dreary textbook.
Extravagant with hundreds of first-rate black-and-white illustrations, this is a thorough introduction to American history. All American History makes U.S. history come alive for children as they investigate the cultural, political, religious, and economic events that formed and impacted this country. Much more thorough than typical curricula, All American History covers thirty-two weeks studying not only the events themselves, but also the environment in which each event occurred and the impact this event has had on America.
Covering exploration through 1840 in this volume, each week's lesson includes a chapter from the reader, maps, forms, review questions in the activity book, and plenty of hands-on and research ideas in the teacher's guide. The activity book is more of a workbook with review exercises, unit wrap-ups, plenty of useful maps, and more. |

Geography
Basic geography is essential, but done in large, infrequent doses it can become tedious or, worse yet, too quickly forgotten. Daily Geography uses a short daily lesson approach that avoids both pitfalls.
The Global Puzzle provides a hands-on way to reinforce what your child is learning in an engaging and intuitive manner. |

Other
A fidget friendly, hand exercising, stress-relieving, creativity enhancing study tool! Thinking Putty helps students focus by giving their hands something to do while their brain is working.
Thinking Putty is Silly Putty but enhanced with knock-your-socks-off colors that shift or morph completely as you squeeze. This non-toxic, non-gooey putty will bounce, stretch, tear, drip, snap, even shatter. Silicone-based, it never dries out. Includes an impressive adult-sized handful of high quality moldable putty.
Many of you are required by your state to test your child yearly. Spectrum Test Prep gives you a way to prepare for that in a no-stress manner. Includes actual test questions, tips on test preparation, strategies and techniques for answering different kinds of questions and full-length practice tests. |
