Match Identical And Non-Identical Items
This is the first card set you are likely to need, and a great one for beginning flash-card work with your child, because it teaches the foundational skill of matching. It is also the only set out of all 16 which does not have additional information on the back. The reason is simple - you don't need it for this set! This set includes 84 high quality, laminated cards, each 2.5" by 3.5". Split into 21 groups of four cards, each group consists of 2 identical pictures and 2 additional different pictures. For instance one group has four horse cards, of which two are identical and two are similar. You will first teach your child to match the identical bay horses. Once this is easy for him, have him match the bay horse to the black horse, or the black horse to the white horse. The idea is to help him develop an understanding of what a horse is; and to clarify what a horse is vs. the color of the horse, the background of the picture, or any of the other things that autistic kids accidentally learn. Don't limit yourself to matching with this set though - it can also be used to teach virtually anything.
Abstract Categories
Teaching an autistic child to categorize the things he sees around him is no easy task. It is, however, a necessary one, if he is ever to understand instructions, questions and comments like, "Wow, look at all that fruit!" or "Could you find me something sharp to cut this open?" "Don't forget to grab something to read while you wait for the Dr.!" "Would you like a snack?" "Do you have a pet?"
With 28 groups of three 2.5" by 3.5" cards, each group teaching a different concept, this set is a wonderful one to use for teaching those concepts. Introduces such concepts as things that are sticky, sharp, tall, hot or noisy; along with things you can ride, things you find at birthday parties, things that can fly, and 20 more.
Fill-ins & reversals
This unique set specifically targets two commonly overlooked skills. The first is the beginning conversation skill of being able to fill in the blank on a given phrase. The second is the skill of knowing the answer to the question, regardless of how the question is phrased. This set includes 84 2.5" by 3.5" high quality laminated cards, each with two phrases printed on the back.
For instance:
#8, A boat sails on the ...

Because of the wide variety of its subjects, this set is possibly the most versatile of all the sets.
Caveat:
#42, A female photographer who could use a bit of permanent marker to come up to our family's standards of modesty.
Question Series: Community Outings
Includes 40 cards, 5 cards each about the doctor, post office, supermarket,

Question Series: In The Home
These 40 cards feature 5 card series about taking a bath, doing laundry, swimming, planting flowers, playing hide and seek, baking cookies, brushing your teeth, and eating breakfast.
Caveats:
While not graphic in any way, depending on your family's modesty standards you may want to apply a little permanent marker to the garden statues on card #36. Also, the "bee" pictured on card #39 looks like a fly to us.
Question Series: Entertainment
Forty cards featuring the beach, circus, petting zoo, aquarium, restaurant, playground, movie theater, and amusement park.
Caveats:
Card #9 features female trapeze artists.

How do you swim?
* Dive in the water
* Move your arms
* Kick your legs
Learn To Talk About Animals

Learn To Talk About Sports
This set contains 40 different sport cards, ranging from the typical sports such as baseball, to water sports, like scuba diving, winter sports, including sledding, and others such as horseback riding and even chess!

This set of 40 cards features everyday items such as towels, scissors, money, keys, dishes, etc.

I can see this set being especially popular with active little boys, due to the many high-interest pictures. The 40 cards feature many vehicles, including a helicopter and a fire truck and many occupations, as varied as a policeman, doctor and artist.
Caveats:
Card #27 features a magician.
Learn To Talk About Food And Appliances
40 everyday items, mostly kitchen related. Includes French fries, apples, cookies, a toaster, a computer, and 35 other cards.
Learn To Talk About Toys, Baby And Clothes
This set is much more about clothes and toys than it is about babies, making it more universal than it might first appear. It includes such pictures as a coat, crib, dollhouse, Noah's ark toy, a book, and 35 more.
Rooms Of The House
Specifically designed to teach the contents and purposes of the rooms of your house, this set touches on a number of important everyday items. Seasons
Geared for teaching varying aspects of the seasons, this set includes ten cards for each of the seasons. The cards range from typical, such as playing in the snow, fall leaves, and ice skating; to less typical, such as hiking or sleeping; giving you a wide variety of topics to discuss. |
