When we work with autistic children, the first area we work on, the most important area we work on, is that of language acquisition. But even when a child is not talking, he is still communicating. Unfortunately, that communication often takes the form of screaming and tantruming. Developed with the support of top doctors and child development professionals, Choiceworks is a visual support system that uses pictures to guide children through daily life. Sure, you could use white boards to do the same thing, (and we have done so). But our experience is that time is your most valuable commodity, and any way that you can streamline training is priceless.
Ideal for teaching routines and transitions for children ages 3-9, Choiceworks includes three boards and three short stories to read with your child to introduce the system. The Schedule Board is the most valuable and will get a constant workout. With forty visual symbol magnets, routines and schedules can be sequenced to both avoid meltdowns and teach flexibility. These include symbols for morning, evening, and bathroom routines; getting ready for school; going to appointments; and more. There may be a symbol or two that you would not normally utilize, but you can assign whatever meaning you wish to any symbol; your child will understand. After tasks are completed, your child chooses his reward.
The Waiting Board will help teach your child to wait, take turns and not interrupt. It also includes a convenient timer!
The Feelings Board trains your child self-control by providing clear alternatives and expectations. Well suited for children with autism, Choiceworks can also be invaluable for any child with speech delays. A Parent's Manual is included which explains how to use the system and provides helpful hints and suggestions. The Universal Storage Easel displays the Choiceworks Boards and provides organized storage for 40 magnets and Companion Books.
