Timberdoodle's review
Even Your Pre-reader Can Learn Chess
Now you can introduce your pre-reader to the engrossing game of chess. Fifteen years experience as a chess instructor inspired Patzi Stewart to develop this captivating chess kit called Once A Pawn A Time.

Imaginative Approach the Clearest We've Seen
Complete with chessboard, pieces, and two instructional storybooks, this imaginative approach to teaching chess is the clearest method we have ever seen.

Introduction to Pieces, Kingdoms, Layout
Instructional Storybook One begins with a whimsical introduction to all chess pieces, the two chess kingdoms, and the board layout. Your child will fully understand each piece and its permitted moves at the completion of this book.

All You Need to Teach Yourself Chess
Storybook Two develops your child's novice playing skills by exploring the strengths and weaknesses of each chess piece. Even if you have never played chess yourself, Once A Pawn A Time is all you need to teach your child and yourself this classic game.

A Note About The Delightful Characters
The whimsical chess pieces shown on the box are exactly as depicted in the books. Cheery and memorable, we are sure every chess student will enjoy them. However, the actual chess pieces included in the set are standard chess pieces without faces, as seen in the pictures above. This makes it a set that will grow with your child, even when he has long ago mastered these instruction books!

Book 1 introduces beginners to the moves of chess pieces.
Book 2 advances playing skills by exploring the strengths and weaknesses of each chess piece.

Set Includes:
  • Chess Board
  • Chess Pieces
  • Instructional Books
  • Sturdy Magnetic-closure Storage Box

  • Please note: The chess pieces included in this set are traditional style pieces, not a caricaturized style as pictured on the box (see additional product views above).

GREAT Teaching Program! December 9, 2012
    Reviewer: Sara
I bought this for my older children (7 & 9) to learn to play chess in a fun and engaging way, knowing that I would need as much help as they would. I found it easy to do a little each day (though we had a hard time stopping each day) especially with its cute storybook format. I didn't expect my 3 year old would pick up as much as he has! It has taught us the game quickly and easily. I do wish there was a section where the rules are stated together, as I have to search through the book when we have a question. Also, there are a few times that I have misinterpreted something, so it is a good idea to have another resource to reference if you do not understand the game yourself.

    Buy This! :) December 6, 2012

We like to encourage the family to be together in a constructive way to pass the time, rather than watch videos. We prefer to avoid games of chance in favor of those that require thinking skills. I also love quiet. Chess has always been something I desired to improve on and to teach the kids, but it seemed rather daunting... until Once A Pawn A Time! My reading children picked up the book, explained it to their little siblings, and now my children (ages 10, 7, 5, and 3) LOVE to play chess together. We can easily reference the rules of play for any given piece, and the rules of strategy are broken up into beginner and advanced, allowing us to grow gradually. I played chess for the first time in years, and had so much fun. It is really nice to enjoy chess in an unintimidating fashion. (And my home-educating Mommy self feels good about the time they spend playing it together.) Highly recommended!

A Perfect Intro to Chess October 26, 2012

This is actually a gift for some older kids and not my own younger kids. But I'll be getting another one for when my kids get older! I read part of the book and it really makes learning chess so fun for kids! There's a great story about the pieces that play on the board. The author even uses the look of the chess piece as a cue to the player of what the function of that chess piece is. Chess is a thoughtful game that requires some strategy so there are two books included...the first book is about chess piece functions and the second is about game strategy. You'll really like this method of learning chess!

LOVE THIS GAME! May 31, 2012

I bought this game for my six year old to introduce him to chess. We ended up using it with our four year old as well and they both love it! Our family especially likes the pictoral books that teach you the rules of the game. So creative! And great for visual and non-visual learners. Fantastic product!

    Wonderful Idea! December 1, 2010
Reviewer: Samantha Kelley from Prestonsburg, KY United States
I have always wanted to know more about chess, and my children have been interested too. We have bought other chess teaching games before, but they didn't hold their interest. Once A Pawn A Time is impressive right from the start. It is beautifully packaged, and had the children interested immediately! We have been using it in the evenings during family time, with our older 4 children, ages 13-6. We just finished the first book and this game is a winner in my book! What a wonderful way to introduce chess through a story! The characters are funny, the price is great, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in teaching, or learning chess!
