Building Thinking Skills
These thinking skills books are among our favorites because of their tremendous scope. They develop four basic analytical skills (similarities/differences, sequences, classification, and analogies) through both figural and verbal problems.

In addition, there are problems dealing with deductive reasoning, map skills, Venn diagrams, mental manipulation of two-dimensional objects, and much more.

Studies have shown that students using these books have raised their national test scores significantly in both content and cognitive tests! What's more, these books are never boring!

Another outstanding component of Timberdoodle's 2017 Fourth-Grade Curriculum Kit!

Building Thinking Skills Book 2 covers describing shapes, figural similarities and differences, figural sequences, figural classifications, figural analogies, describing things, verbal similarities and differences, verbal sequences, verbal classifications, and verbal analogies.

The most concise book of critical thinking March 3, 2017
Reviewer: Mrs. S from COLVILLE, WA United States
This book teaches many concepts very concisely.  Shapes, map reading, deductive reasoning, sequencing and more.  My 11 year old does it independently and has only requested help a handful of times.  My 10 year old needs "hand holding" for each page, as he is an extremely concrete thinker and struggles to think in an abstract fashion. The only thing I dislike about this book is the way that there are 10-20 "easy" pages (drawing lines to match items) followed by a series of more challenging pages that require significant thought and writing multiple sentences for each question.  The only reason it's not five stars for us is the spacing of those pages, my kids resent getting to a section that feels overwhelming after a section of easy problem solving.  It is still a book I recommend and we will continue to use the series.

My Child Likes This Better Than Book 1 October 2, 2014
Reviewer: Kimberlee
Book 1 was overwhelming to my child. At the age recommended by Timberdoodle to complete Book 1, he was overwhelmed by the volume of writing assignments (helped by my eventual willingness to simply dictate his answers so he could focus on the thinking exercises themselves.) Now that he is in 4th grade, he is thoroughly enjoying Book 2. The assignments are very similar to the assignments in Book 1, but aren't as overwhelming to him with a few more years behind him. He does 2 pages each day, 5 days a week (10 pages total), and though it is a big book, I think he'll get through it with ease. Actually, he enjoys it. It's a nice break from the typical math/language assignments of most of the rest of his school day. I would recommend this to any child age 8 and up.

Brain exercise!! January 16, 2013
Reviewer: Timberdoodle fan in Washington
We love this series at our house. The activities are varied, short and effective. Your child will cover a wide variety of activities to stretch their thinking in a way that no other workbook that I have seen will work their minds. It never gets boring because there is so much variety. It is challenging and teaches new thinking, and yet the incremental nature keeps it from being overwhelming. Almost all the pages can be achieved independently with the exception of the ones that require knowledge on subjects not yet covered in their schooling. For example, they may be asked to use their knowledge of the Civil War to complete an assignment. If they have not yet covered this topic, they will need your help. This is a bonus feature because it helps them see the importance of their other subjects and allows for some great discussions. I take fifth and sixth grade to complete this book. However, it would not be overtaxing to complete it in one school year.

YES, you need this book! January 16, 2013
Reviewer: Alicia Thorson
Ah, the Critical Learning Company. This is THE book that truly challenges my 4th grader. With little to no help from Mom, he is learning concepts I never learned in school, & soaking them up like a sponge. The lessons build on each other, & engage the child beautifully, without unnecessary repetition, but just enough work to be sure the concepts are understood. This is a KEEPER, & I will continue to seek out the Building Thinking Skills series!
