As traditional as melting popsicles and the sound of sprinklers in the morning, summer in the city always included sidewalk chalk drawings.
It was not uncommon for our family of six sisters to devote hours to drawing horses, flowers, and castles, only to wash them off and start again.

Summer Activity
The Big Draw Drawing Machine takes this lazy summer activity and gives it an educational spin, introducing your children to the alphabet, number recognition, measurement, and especially the necessity of following directions*. Big Draw is the ideal tool for outlining large-scale pictures on your driveway or sidewalk.

Choose from one of the ten included pattern cards (more designs are available online) and make a dot on the pavement. Now turn the Big Draw base to line up the letter and the tape-measure tab and you have the second dot. Get the next coordinate and repeat. Correctly connect the dots and enjoy the enormous dinosaur or a roomy rocket. Learning how to use the Big Draw is as much fun as cracking a secret code.

Once your children get the hang of it, give them only the coordinates and see how fast they can figure out what the drawing is. Better yet, challenge your older children to design pattern cards of their own to stump mom or dad. Using art, math, thinking skills, and gross-motor skills, Big Draw is a whole-brain activity.

Rugged Design for Hours of Use
The Big Draw unit is made of rugged plastic and stainless steel. It has large letters with an easy-to-read, twenty-nine-inch tape measure with locking button. Also includes ten patterns with easy-to-follow instructions and five jumbo pieces of quality sidewalk chalk to color in your creations. Ages 6 and up.

*I need to emphasize understanding the directions, as we had three families review this product for us and all three assumed they knew what to do and all three initially failed. One even mentioned that it would have been easier just to draw freehand. But here is the good part; the children who persevered walked away with new skills and competencies that those who gave up missed out on. So read the instructions and everything should turn out great!
