We didn't want to clutter your home with another single-purpose educational toy – most of us already have too many of those. But we knew that lacing and the subsequent skills it creates--eye-hand and bilateral coordination, fine-motor and visual skills, and color and shape identification--are crucial for preschoolers to master. We looked at many lacing beads, bought several, and rejected them all. We were near despair when we found what we were looking for in Beleduc's Colorful Caterpillars.

Color & Shape Matching
Winner of many awards, Colorful Caterpillars excels because of the many ways it can be used. Initially, it can be used as a free-play threading activity. Colorful Caterpillars' wooden tips ensure success with even the chubbiest of fingers. When basic threading becomes easy, you're ready to introduce the game. Roll only the color die, name the color, and help your toddler find the matching color. Take turns building your caterpillar. At a later session, only use the shape die to build your caterpillars. Step-by-step, you will be building color and shape recognition and the concept of taking turns.
