Beyond Drill to Real Skills

Most parents know that a child who only memorizes math facts without really understanding math will find progressively complex concepts more and more difficult to understand. But what they erroneously think is that such problems arise about the time a child is memorizing the multiplication table. Not so. Unlike reading, an integral skill that is tightly woven throughout our entire day, math tends to be a more sporadic subject, essential when you need it and then easily set aside. That is why it is imperative that a child is able to reason his way through any mathematical problem.

Award-winning Mathematical Reasoning is a great place to start. With 282 pages of quick, straightforward problems to build mathematical reasoning skills in preschoolers, these highly motivational activities will take your child beyond mere drill work by using step-by-step, discussion-based problem solving. Concepts spiral gradually so that children do not forget as they go. The concepts are written to the standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Non-reproducible.

Another outstanding component of Timberdoodle's 2016 PreK Curriculum Kit!

Table of Contents/Skills include: Addition, Application, Count, Fractions, Language, Logic, Manipulative, Match, Order, Pattern, Shape, and Subtraction.

Good intro to basic math skills July 27, 2016
Reviewer: E.E. from Cordova, TN
The Mathematical Reasoning Beginning Two book was a great introduction to many basic counting, mathematical and number recognition skills for my 4-yr-old daughter. The book is laid out well, building on previous concepts and progressively getting more challenging. I made copies of several of the pages in order to save the originals for my other children, once they are preschool age. My daughter seemed to enjoy most of the pages as well.

Math is fun! March 14, 2014
Reviewer: Snickerslatte
My 3 year old worked through Begining 1 in about 6 months, and my plan was just to review the book with him, but it was way to easy after all he had learned. So I purchased Begining 2. It builds on the same concepts learned in Begining 1, but starts introducing numbers 6 to 10. I still feel that some of the rhyming word puzzles are a little over this age groups head, but the rest of the book is so wonderful, that I still am happy to buy the book. We work through 2 to 4 pages at a time, I don't have my son write in the book as I will use it again with my youngest, but I don't feel that this hampers his learning or enjoyment of the book. It is such a pleasure to use, that babysitter was able to pick it up and do lessons with my son. Both of the enjoyed it.

My 3.5 year old is currently working on the Beginning 2, Mathematical Reasoning book. We finished the book 1 last semester. It's perfect for him developmentally--fun and just the right amount of challenge without causing him to get frustrated. We love books by the Critical Thinking Co. It is a great book with colorful pages and a different approach. It is not just about counting but about thinking. My three-year old ds loves it and is definitely learning a new set of information.
