...The master considered this for a moment, then said, "Very well." Bartholomew breathed a sigh of relief, as did the other slaves. But then the master said, "Have him finish his chores. And then at sunset, cut...off...his...hands!" The master glared at Bartholomew as he said this, and once again Hasbah tried to argue the point.
"Hasbah!" the master barked, and Hasbah knew the discussion was over.
"Yes, Master," he said, hanging his head. Then he led Bartholomew out by the arm, telling three of the other slaves to clean up the mess.
"Hasbah, please!" Bartholomew whispered, desperate.
"Quiet, boy," the older slave said. "Your fate is sealed."
Bartholomew went back to work, the stench of the master's chamber pot on his clothes, and the stench of fear in his heart…
