Timberdoodle's review Learn more

First published in 1976 Bob Books have been used by millions of beginning readers and have long been a staple in the home school community. Each pint-sized story is carefully crafted to help young children master essential reading skills. Fully phonics based, these books focus on decoding, identifying each letter of the alphabet and their specific sounds.

Developed as a step-by-step, book-by-book program to guide your children smoothly through the beginning stages of reading, this simple, progressive approach, can be a valuable stepping-stone for children who are mastering phonics but still too shaky to attempt basal readers.

Beginning with repetitive simple single-consonant two word sentences each book builds on the skills and vocabulary from the last book.

Why do children like Bob Books?

First, these time-honored book are not only are sized just right for little hands, but the stories are also short and sweet. In fact, the very first book is a mere 22 words told over 8 pages. Yet there is great satisfaction for your youngster as he completes his very first book.

Secondly, these lighthearted books contain a bit of wacky mischief. In the first book overweight Mat sits on cone-shaped Sam, an action that has not failed to amuse children for over 30 years.

Finally, because of the simple text and clean cartoon-type illustrations children who are easily prone to distractions will have an easier time focusing and ultimately mastering phonics.

Each set of books contains a card with an introduction to the series and 10 to 12 parental teaching tips and stores neatly in reclosable boxes.

Bob Books Set 1 July 21, 2015
Reviewer: Jessica G.
So far these are pretty good tools in helping with beginning reading. I like that each book focuses on certain letters. It is helping my two in learning sight words slightly also. All in all I do recommend these. My only regret is that I didn't begin with the pre-reading set.

Toddler is memorizing sight words now April 21, 2014
Reviewer: Katherine
We love the BOB books. My 27 month old is memorizing sight words now entirely on his own, even pointing them out when he sees the BOB sight words in other places.

All seven children loved these books! January 14, 2013
Reviewer: Janice
Disclaimer:I didn't get these books from Timberdoodle when I started using them 18 years ago- they came used! All seven of my children (both genders), some with dislexia, and all different personalities and learning styles have LOVED the Bob books. They were cute and funny for the creative child. They were short for the impatient child. They focused on one word family for the confused child. We all had our favorites, but the ones I'm remembering reading over and over were Mat, Sam, Dot, 10 cut-ups, Jig (who's a pig!), and Lad and the fat cat (because of that fat cat). Because of their size they can be tucked into pockets, backpacks, purses, or even lunch boxes.

Introductory Readers June 1, 2012
Reviewer: R8eo
This product is a great introduction to word families, but lacks interesting illustrations. While the reading activity is very effective, I feel that illustrations could be more endearing to the reluctant reader. Stick figure sketches have a neat child-like quality, but can seem like one is no more memorable than the last. Well illustrated books tend to be more likely to charm the hesitant reader.
