Timberdoodle's review
Do you have an older child that still struggles with spelling? You are not alone. Instead of berating yourself for the mistaken assumption that you have somehow failed your student, solve the problem. There are dozens of time-consuming spelling programs available to home educators, many of them excellent. That's fine if preparing for the spelling program is how you want to spend your day, but I don't. Face it; if your child is an awful speller anyway, then spending a considerable amount of time on a spelling program is not going to make his day. This is a large part of the appeal of the Apples program. Ten minutes a day is all that is required, with virtually no preparation on the part of the teaching parent. The program consists of daily drills that emphasize phonics rules by applying them in sentences, Bible verses, and puzzles. No long lists to memorize and no tests make Apples a winner with any reluctant student. Designed by a teaching parent, Apples shows a sensitivity toward practicality that few other spelling programs do. Some children will always struggle with spelling, but with the right foundation any child can become more capable.

Easy Spelling In Quick Daily Lessons March 3, 2017
Reviewer: Mrs. S from COLVILLE, WA United States
My 10 & 11 year old really like this.  Each page takes ten minutes or so and is done independently.  The work is part learning "rules" of spelling (like doubling consonants) and part copy work.  The author encourages the "stuck" student to review the answer section and copy the words if needed.  Each page has plenty of white space, so they don't seem overwhelming, and the amount of writing builds slowly.  It is a biblical based book, though it is mostly copying scripture rather than teaching a specific doctrine or theology.

Great idea, but ... April 6, 2014
Reviewer: Suki B.
I won't use it nor recommend it. The good points are that it provides brief daily practice, minimal teacher-time needed, and is aimed at older kids. For me, there is too much emphasis on "how to do it wrong." For example, I have never thought of the letter a in another as an "uh" sound, more "ah." It is the 3rd sound of a: short a, long a, and "ah" a. So seeing a printed list of a whole section of "uh" sounds that aren't, seems to make spelling harder rather than easier to this visual/auditory learner. I can't get all those visual "uh's" out of my brain. Also, while the author claims this is not a bible study, nearly all the examples used are from the bible. For kids who have been raised on everything-bible, and aren't rebelling, this might not be too distracting. The others should have fair warning.

Great for Independent Spelling May 6, 2011
Reviewer: Amanda Hall from Oxford, GA United States
My DD, 12, has been using this for 6th grade. She enjoys the lessons and retains the information well. I go over lesson rule with her and point out how the lesson applies in her writing then she completes one lesson per day for that topic. Occasionally I will make up a quiz for her or do an oral drill with her over the words. I have seen improvement in her spelling this year...but we will stay the course and move on to Apples 2 next.

Loving this book! April 18, 2011
Reviewer: Angela Maddox from Lebanon, OR United States
I purchased this workbook for my two sixth graders. They needed some extra help with spelling rules. We have been using it for two weeks and I am so impressed. The kids like it because the lessons are easy to read, short and to the point. I like it because they can work independently and there is a good amount of practice but not too much. I am already seeing an improvement in some areas of weakness.

I really thought these were great for a son who had poor phonics teaching when he was younger. Really fit what we needed at the time.
