Polar explorer Richard Byrd hovered near death, knowing rescue was months away. Could he survive until then?

Five years after his first expedition to the Antarctic, Richard Byrd was back, spending a long polar winter alone in a tiny hut buried in the ice. He was 123 miles south of the main base and the team of men he'd brought to the Antarctic with him. Sick, dazed, weakened, and with poisonous fumes from a stove nearly killing him, he struggled to remain alive in his isolated hut knowing that no help could reach him for months.

The story of the man behind this polar quest is as exciting as the adventure itself. Byrd's courage and determination to survive alone at the bottom of the world is a gripping tale of personal bravery.

This book makes me cold!  Follow the story of Richard Byrd, as he was "alone in the Antarctic."  This book is very informational about what all was involved in planning an Arctic expedition.  This riveting book will provide a great learning experience for your child.
