Admiral Richard Byrd - Alone in the Antarctic
Polar explorer Richard Byrd hovered near death, knowing rescue was months away. Could he survive until then?
Five years after his first expedition to the Antarctic, Richard Byrd was back, spending a long polar winter alone in a tiny hut buried in the ice. He was 123 miles south of the main base and the team of men he'd brought to the Antarctic with him. Sick, dazed, weakened, and with poisonous fumes from a stove nearly killing him, he struggled to remain alive in his isolated hut – knowing that no help could reach him for months.
The story of the man behind this polar quest is as exciting as the adventure itself. Byrd's courage and determination to survive alone at the bottom of the world is a gripping tale of personal bravery.
About the Landmark series:
For over half a century, Landmark books have been an important part of home libraries. Jam-packed with exciting stories and adventures, the Landmark series is known as the first historical series for kids. Teaching parents continue to trust the Landmark name to engage their children with accurate information on well-known people and interesting periods in American history. The variety of subjects; action-filled, story-like narratives; large and clear print; and reasonable prices make the Landmark series an excellent and enjoyable way to learn more about history. Extremely popular in the 1950s and 1960s, while these are all secular titles the fact that they were written as many as fifty years ago ensures their wholesomeness, as much as any book pertaining to the lives of mortal men can be wholesome.
Paul Rink spent seven years in South America, working in the fields of mechanical and steam engineering, physics, and electronics. He did intelligence work during World War II. After a time at sea, he devoted himself to writing many books for young teens, articles for such magazines as American Heritage and Esquire, and television dramas.
