A Reason for Writing - Kindergarten
This book focuses on writing individual letters, accompanied by pictures to color, mostly of animals. A perfect fit for the beginning writer!

About the A Reason for Writing Series
Handwriting, especially in this era of word processors, is a fairly low priority compared to other subjects. However, if you are going to make handwriting a part of your curriculum, here is something to think about. For over a dozen years we sold and used another handwriting program. The end result for us was less than stellar, even if the children's handwriting had duplicated what was pictured in the exercise books, as I would question the time spent on copying meaningless sentences. Because we know that handwriting is a learned motor skill requiring regular practice, doesn't it seem that if your child is going to labor over something with his mind and hands, he should also engage his heart? A Reason for Writing does all three.

Includes scripture border sheets
With each 10- to 15-minute daily lesson built around Bible verses, content is not only instructional, but also inspirational. Plus, at the end of each week your children will be given the opportunity to apply excellence to their work as they copy their verse-of-the-week onto their choice of "Scripture Border Sheets." Done with care, these completed sheets are worthy of sharing with friends and family. (Note: your child will get to this feature in future grades, but it isn't a part of K.)

Living Bible Paraphrase
A Reason for Writing uses a Living Bible paraphrase for its verses. For those dyed-in-the-wool KJV-only families, let me suggest that even this Scriptural rendition is better for your child to toil over than the trivial sentence about the environment common in other handwriting programs. Each workbook is full color.

Another outstanding component of Timberdoodle's 2016 Kindergarten Curriculum Kit!

This full-color workbook focuses on one letter per lesson built around a Creation theme. This is the only workbook that does not include verses and border sheets.

One of the better handwriting books I've Seen July 13, 2016
Reviewer: Christa from Saint Augustine, FL United States
I really like this handwriting book because it has some of the letters to trace and some that you need to form your own. There are single dots so the student knows where to start, which is a good guide, but it allows the student to write their letters in a semi guided way instead of either free hand or complete tracing. The pages are clean with nice pictures on the back for coloring. Good design and easy to follow.

Helpful tool in teaching how to write letter November 10, 2015
Reviewer: Brandi
I love that this book has a dot on the penmanship paper showing the correct place to start writing the letter. My daughter was getting confused with some letters and not writing them the correct way, however this book makes it clear for her. This book uses a tree house to try and teach kids where to start the letters on the penmanship paper (roof for the top line, ceiling for the middle line) but I don't reference that when teaching her. That seemed a bit too confusing for us. The coloring pages are nice, however a tiny bit confusing since the coloring page is behind the letter it's for instead of directly above the letter, but that's not a large problem by any means. Overall I like this book and it has helped her write her letters correctly.

Excellent resource -- only letters (no scripture) August 15, 2015
Reviewer: Kate S.
This book adopts the image of treehouse to demonstrate capital and lowercase letter writing. This appealed to my son and we can refer to it as a reference. The letters and lines are large, there is enough tracing provided before the child is left to write on his own and it's beautifully laid out. It was my first real handwriting curriculum and I'm very pleased. There are no scriptures at all in this edition of Handwriting for a Reason, as other reviewers have mentioned. It's possible those appear as the learner progresses.

Good practice January 19, 2015
Reviewer: Catherine E.
I love that I can give a page to my daughter to do, and give her little to no direction and she just goes! Good practice, but if you are completing at the "1.5 lessons a week" it is VERY slow and you may want to supplement with mazes, etc.

Good for a starting point, better with some help! November 6, 2014
Reviewer: Tracy
I didn't know until after making the purchase that there is an accompanying instructor's guide for this series. I purchased it and definitely recommend that others do, too as it explains how to correctly form the letters as well as giving more information about the animal and what to do for each lesson. I have already seen a major improvement in my daughter's handwriting. With that said, she does seem to find the lessons of just writing letters and coloring a picture to be a bit boring and doesn't necessarily enjoy completing them on their own. When we pretended that we were at a dentist office full of penguins to go along with the letter 'p' she enjoyed it much more, lol. With instructor's guide in hand and a little extra creativity, though, this program is wonderful!
