Timberdoodle's review Learn more

Handwriting, especially in this era of word processors, is a fairly low priority compared to other subjects. However, if you are going to make handwriting a part of your curriculum, here is something to think about. For over a dozen years we sold and used another handwriting program. The end result for us was less than stellar, even if the children's handwriting had duplicated what was pictured in the exercise books, as I would question the time spent on copying meaningless sentences. Because we know that handwriting is a learned motor skill requiring regular practice, doesn't it seem that if your child is going to labor over something with his mind and hands, he should also engage his heart? A Reason for Writing does all three.

With each 10- to 15-minute daily lesson built around Bible verses, content is not only instructional, but also inspirational. Plus, at the end of each week your children will be given the opportunity to apply excellence to their work as they copy their verse-of-the-week onto their choice of "Scripture Border Sheets.” Done with care, these completed sheets are worthy of sharing with friends and family.

A Reason for Writing uses a Living Bible paraphrase for its verses. For those dyed-in-the-wool KJV-only families, let me suggest that even this Scriptural rendition is better for your child to toil over than the trivial sentence about the environment common in other handwriting programs. Each workbook is full color.

Verses are taken from the Gospels. Does NOT include transition or cursive lessons.

NOTE: The Transition Book will replace either book B or C. The Transition Book includes extra exercises for both manuscript and cursive. If your second-grader is ready for cursive then you should use The Transition Book and follow it with book C. If your third-grader needs more work on manuscript before tackling cursive, use The Transition Book and then follow with book D.

Excellent product with a couple of small downsides September 6, 2010
Reviewer: Sarah from Oklahoma, United States
I used A Reason for Writing during this past school year for my sons, ages 6 and 8.  I loved the concept of the Bible verses.  I loved that the lessons were brief.  My boys have a short attention span.

I was using book A for my 6yo and book B for my 8yo.  I saw no difference in difficulty or verse length between the two books.  In the end I think both of my boys have good handwriting and I won't have either of them go through another printing workbook.  They were helpful, but one was enough.

My boys didn't get the border sheets.  I tried to inspire them, but they just wanted to do the writing and be done, not color the page and share it.  This is a personality thing. My daughter, who is 4, will eat that concept up in a year or two.  So keep your child's personality in mind.

Lastly, the pages are hard to tear out.  When you tear our their special paper for them to do their Very Best Work on and it RIPS, it's frustrating.  Be very careful tearing out your border sheets.

Great Handwriting Tool August 12, 2010
Reviewer: Vicky from Monroe, NC United States
I love how this book has small lines to use for learning handwriting.  All the other books we've used have these huge, spaced-out lines so when my son goes to write without the lines, he writes his words so large.  With the small lines, he is finally learning the concept of how to write properly.

Excellent handwriting program! November 5, 2008
Reviewer: Debbie from Inlet, NY
Excellent handwriting program!  Each child works on memorizing and writing out one verse each week.  The handwriting practice is divided by four days.  By the end of the week the student should be able to write out the verse in its entirety.  I like this program because my son can work on it on his own and it is not overwhelming.

I am ready to purchase more... November 4, 2008
Reviewer: Lorraine S. from Lindenwold, NJ
This series of books has been great not only for my kids' penmanship skills, but also for fostering an independent learning ideal as these books are very easy to use by my kids without my help.  It also has helped with the learning of reading as they are constantly exposed to the words as well as them being exposed to scripture on a continual basis.  An added advantage is that these become gifts for friends and family members!  I am ready to purchase more for the next one in our family who is ready to start her homeschooling!

So straightforward in teaching October 24, 2008
Reviewer: Julie K. from Salem, OR
We started using this from the very beginning. It is so straightforward in teaching printing and then transitioning to cursive, that my children wanted to do more than the necessary amount for the day. I love the Bible verses it reinforces and the kids love the illustrated characters that show up throughout the books.
