A Reason for Writing - A/1st Grade
Handwriting, especially in this era of word processors, is a fairly low priority compared to other subjects. However, if you are going to make handwriting a part of your curriculum, here is something to think about. For over a dozen years we sold and used another handwriting program. The end result for us was less than stellar, even if the children's handwriting had duplicated what was pictured in the exercise books, as I would question the time spent on copying meaningless sentences. Because we know that handwriting is a learned motor skill requiring regular practice, doesn't it seem that if your child is going to labor over something with his mind and hands, he should also engage his heart? A Reason for Writing does all three.

Includes scripture border sheets
With each 10- to 15-minute daily lesson built around Bible verses, content is not only instructional, but also inspirational. Plus, at the end of each week your children will be given the opportunity to apply excellence to their work as they copy their verse-of-the-week onto their choice of "Scripture Border Sheets." Done with care, these completed sheets are worthy of sharing with friends and family.

Living Bible Paraphrase
A Reason for Writing uses a Living Bible paraphrase for its verses. For those dyed-in-the-wool KJV-only families, let me suggest that even this Scriptural rendition is better for your child to toil over than the trivial sentence about the environment common in other handwriting programs. Each workbook is full color.

Another outstanding component of Timberdoodle's 2016 First-Grade Curriculum Kit!

Scripture based October 13, 2015
Reviewer: Catherine E.
We used the kindergarten version of this last year and really enjoyed it. So far I've been happy with the first grade level, too. I love that the book uses scripture to practice writing - two birds with one stone, as they say. My daughter gets a chance to learn scriptures and practicing her handwriting at the same time! There is a review section in the beginning of the book that we pretty much blew through - my daughter was ready for the more advanced section. However, if you take summers off you may find the review more helpful. We only finished our kindergarten year a few weeks before starting first grade, so not much review was called for.

My daughter always chooses to do A Reason for Handwriting first each day. Her handwriting had improved drastically and she has found more enjoyment in writing now that her letters are more legible. Recommend 100%

A Reason for Handwriting A (love this...) February 4, 2015
Reviewer: Vickie S.
One of the reasons for starting homeschooling was to correct incorrect procedure she'd learned (or not been corrected) in her previous schools. She'd also gotten bored at those schools. With this book, we're not only able to show correct direction for the pencil to go, but she has a goal in mind, not just mindless writing. She practices, and then she gets to make someone a gift! She loves it, and so do I. I also use copywork from Phonics Pathways, and I have a dry erase board we work with as well. Not sure if this would be enough for her on its own? Still highly recommend.

A Reason for Writing - A/1st Grade May 5, 2014
Reviewer: Joy H.
What should be a simple transition has become a struggle. My son & I enjoyed & found the Kindergarten version of "A Reason for Handwriting" a useful & lovely introduction to handwriting. While I appreciate the IDEA of moving towards writing words, sentences & Bible verses. However, the SIZE of the space that has been provided in which to write each letter/word/etc is SO small that what SHOULD have been a simple transition for my child has become an unnecessary struggle.

One of Our Family's Favorites! June 18, 2013
Reviewer: Kimberlee
This is by far one of our family's favorite Timberdoodle products! Both of my boys have now worked through this book. It's the perfect book to pull out when I, as a mom, am engaged working with another child. My boys leave their handwriting books on the table so that if they have a moment when they're waiting for my attention, they can pull it out and keep working. The review lessons at the beginning are a little cumbersome, but only because they don't lead directly to a border sheet (my boys' favorite part of the book). I love the writing tips included at the beginning of each lesson. They are excellent reminders of ways to keep writing neat and tidy. I also love that through copying scriptures, my boys are memorizing God's Word without even trying. We read the verses several times as they copy them, and by the time we are done, they've committed them to memory. We use the border sheets as suggested at the beginning of the book -- as an opportunity to tell others about the Lord. Each of my children thoughtfully considers a recipient for each scripture they write, and we've seen them be very encouraging to residents at nursing homes, recipients of letters, and families in our church who need encouragement. I can't recommend this product enough!
